Thank
you to all the teams that came out to support our 2009 event and congrats to: Desabrais Glass (Middlebury) 1st place, DC's
(Lebanon) 2nd place, Sherwin Williams (Plattsburgh) 3rd place and Boneheads (Rutland) 4th place. Championship went right down
to the 2nd game and was decided in the bottom of the 7th for a 16-15 final.
Also congrats in the Kenny Furnish
Lower Bracket to: Applebees (Rutland) 1st place, Jilly's (Rutland) 2nd place and G. Stone Motors (Rutland) 3rd place.
Positives for the weekend:Saturday the teams were wonderful when rain caused a lot of commotion and forced us to change
fields. After a 3 hour delay and a lot of players helping get the fields ready, a lot of teams provided umpires and appreciated
the tournament was still going on. It was a lot of fun to watch everyone play the games and the effort they put in to help
the tournament take place was truly appreciated.
Negatives: Sunday there was way too much language being thrown
around, too much complaining about umps (mostly by teams that wouldn't supply umps when it was their turn to do so), and a
couple of guys in the parking lot almost got the tournament shut down because we came close to calling the cops on them.
Some changes are being made to this tournament. Alcohol was a problem this year, even though it isn't suppose to be
allowed at the fields. Umpires worked 8 or 9 games a piece Sunday and it was ALL voluntary, they don't need the abuse they
were taking. Language, not just from players, but their spouses/girlfriends really got bad at times. Players and
a bookkeeper are the only ones allowed in the dugout. Wives and girlfriends that are not keeping book are
no longer allowed in the dugout. Sorry if this upsets anyone but you can thank some of the "ladies"
from last year that wanted to cuss like a sailor from the dugouts. Players, families members or simply
fans that verbally abuse umpires will be asked to leave the premises. We've tried to be patient with players that get
caught up in the moment in the past, but there is no patience for non players to use language that is inappropriate at a charity
function.
This is a family charity event to help people fighting
cancer. We appreciate everyone that has supported our event for 8 years now, but some players/teams need to start to think
about why the tournament is being held and get some priorities straight. No world series title is on the line, if that is
the tournament you are looking for there are some great ones that might suit your needs better than ours.
No one
within our family needs to put in 35 hours at a field over the course of 3 days to listen to people that can't control their
alcohol or can't deal with losing games. If you don't like a the bracket or the umpiring find another tournament or run one
of your own. The director of this touranment spent 4 days away from his week old daugther to run this event last year, missed
the birthday party for another one of his children and was unable to attend the calling hours with his wife who lost a friend
that week. If you got a bad call or a bad draw deal with it or don't come back. If you aren't willing to volunteer to
ump, shut your mouth with those who do.
Sorry for the rant, just some things that need to be put out there. 90%
of the players that come out are wonderul and the reason the tournament has been able to last this long, but the other 10%
are part of the reason this may have been the last year. We do appreciate those that come out for the right reason and can't
thank you enough for all the support you've always given us.
We regretfully need to cancel 2010's tournament because
of a scheduling conflict for the Currier family. We do plan to bring the tournament back in 2011, but if winning
is all that matters to you quite franky you'd be better off finding another tournament....that is not what this tournament
has ever been about and it's not what it will EVER be about. People that can not handle losing are simply not welcome
at this event any longer. People that want to complain and/or swear at umpires, but not a single member of
their team will volunteer are also not welcome. Again we can't thank the VERY large majority of you that
support this tournament for what it is for, if it continues it's going to be because of you folks. You've made this event
what it is and for the first 7 years that was something really special.
