The tournament is in memory of Richard "Dick" Currier Sr who lost his battle with cancer on August 18, 2002. He left behind his wife Susan, his son Rick, daughter in law Tiffany, grandsons Ben and Cole, brothers Robert and Ronald, his mother in law Sue Lemire who loved him like a son and many brother and sister in laws. Dick was born on October 5, 1946 in Springfield, Vermont. He remained in Springfield until joining the U.S. Navy in 1965 and eventually serving in Vietnam.

In 1988 Dick separated from the Navy and moved back to Vermont, bringing that hardworking lifestyle with him. He became a fixture (along with his brother Bob) at Bob's Sunoco in Springfield in 1993, where he continued to work until May of 2002. Only then doctor's orders convinced him it was time to take it easy and let others wait on him.

Those who knew Dick considered him an exceptional husband, father and friend. Not even he knew how many lives he touched and if he had known he would have been to modest to admit to it. If you ask his wife Sue, she would say he was more than her husband, he was her inspiration and the best friend she ever had. If you asked Rick, he would say he was more than a father, he was a hero who taught him in so many ways that being a father was much more than simply saying I love you.

Dick will be forever missed by those who knew him and those that didn't get to know him will never realize what a loss that truly was in their life. This tournament is a way for him to continue to fight cancer, even after his battle was lost. That's just the way he would want it to be.

On August 26, 2006 The Dick Currier Memorial Softball Tournament lost a true friend, competitor, and citizen of the tournament when Kenny Furnish gave his last breath in an attempt to help others he thought were more sick than him.

The loss of Kenny will never be forgotten by those who are part of The Dick Currier Memorial Softball Tournament. In future years we would like to feature an upper bracket tournament and a lower bracket tournament for D league teams, if we can draw enough interest from them. If that happens the lower bracket will be referred to as The Dick Currier Memorial Softball Tournament Kenny Furnish Bracket. The upper bracket will simply be The Dick Currier Memorial Softball Tournament Upper Bracket.

RIP Kenny and know that your death will never be lost amongst us. Some of us never got to know you, but we all wish we could have gotten the chance.

Contributions in Kenny's name may be made to the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen St, Framingham, MA 01701-4688.
